In between playing soccer on Tuesday nights and going out for fried chicken and waffles, we meet brands, companies and visionaries who share the same goal: creating opportunities for students and parents like you.

πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘§β€πŸ‘¦ According to a study from Dalhousie University, immigrants’ health tends to worsen the longer they stay in Canada. PhD researcher Iqbal Chowdhury suggests that this is due to a clash of expectations, a lack of available immigration resources, and loneliness. Chowdhury, who lives in Atlantic Canada, where immigration has tripled in the past 15 years, hopes his research results in more accessible services and support.

World’s best procrastinator: Your all-nighter has nothing on Arthur Ross, the “slowest student in the world”, who finally graduated from the University of British Columbia after 54 years. Where did the time go? Ross left UBC’s general arts program to study theatre in Montreal, then law in Toronto, then came back in 2017 to study history. His graduation takes place today and he gives “full credit” to his younger classmates who stayed in school throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

New heights: Students entering Simon Fraser University now have access to more housing options. The new residence hall added to the Burnaby campus opens 383 spots for on-campus housing that will be targeted towards first-year students. The building will reflect Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh influences and include a drumming circle and outdoor space.

No international students allowed? According to the Institut du QuΓ©bec, universities in Quebec are turning down international students out of fear that they will not return to their home countries. In 2022, the federal government turned down nearly 72 per cent of African applicants accepted into a Quebec university, a move that contradicts nationwide efforts to retain international students.

Three cheers for nursing students from the University of Calgary, who partnered with the campus’s Wellness Services to create an intervention plan for excessive alcohol use among first-year students. The animated video they put together covers harm reduction strategies and updated guidelines for the maximum number of drinks consumed (tl;dr, two drinks or less per week).
