The University of Calgary is a comprehensive public research university located in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The University of Calgary started as a branch of the University of Alberta in 1945 and became a separate institution in 1966. Today, the university has over 32,000 students enrolled in more than 200 programs. The UofC is a member of the U15 Group of Canadian research universities. The university is also home to Canada’s first medical school to open in more than 40 years and the largest nursing school in Western Canada. The University of Calgary is ranked as one of the top universities in Canada and is internationally recognized for its research excellence. The university’s research programs are organized into 12 faculties: Arts, Business, Communication & Design, Education, Engineering, Environmental Design, Kinesiology, Law, Medicine, Nursing, Science and Social Work. In addition to academic programs, the University of Calgary also offers a variety of continuing education courses and programs. Notable UofC alumni include Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, James Gosling, Garrett Camp and Robert Thirsk.

The University of Calgary is located in Calgary, Alberta. Calgary is a city in the Canadian province of Alberta. It is situated at the confluence of the Bow River and the Elbow River in the south of the province, in an area of foothills and prairie, about 80 km (50 mi) east of the front ranges of the Canadian Rockies. The university campus is adjacent to Calgary’s downtown core and occupies approximately 200 hectares (490 acres) on the north side of the Bow River.
