Ranked among the top 1% of higher education institutions globally, the Western University acceptance rate is approximately 58%. With more than 400 combinations of undergraduate majors, minors, and specializations, Western University holds the highest national entrance averages of first-year students at 90.6%.

To be considered for admission, applicants must achieve a minimum 80% average on six Ontario Grade 12U- or M-level courses, including the required courses for your program. Just remember, admission is competitive and achieving the minimum average does not guarantee admission!

Some programs also need more information to make an admission decision and different programs require different preparation in order to be successful. For example, you’ll need to know some math and science to be prepared for engineering!

We recommend that you use your time effectively in your last year of high school to really boost your GPA — so choose your courses effectively, keep yourself organized and stay on top of your assignments. It will pay off greatly when it comes time for university admissions!

In general, Western uses this information to evaluate your application:

• Your overall performance in your most recent curriculum
• How you did in courses required for your program
• Any optional or required supplementary forms
• Your level of English language proficiency

General Requirements:

For Ontario High School students, you’ll need:

• An Ontario Secondary School Diploma
• A minimum of six grade 12 U/M level courses (excluding co-op), including:
• English (ENG4U)
• Proof of English Language Proficiency if English is not your first language
• All your completed and in-progress grade 11 U/M level courses
• Requirements specific to your program
• All required and recommended courses must be at the Grade 12U or M level

For Canadian High School Students from provinces other than Ontario, check out this page to see your requirements according to your province. Let’s take a look at the BC High School requirements for an example:

• A completed secondary school diploma or certificate by June
• Five acceptable academic courses numbered 12
  • English 12 or English First Peoples 12
  • Specific requirements for your program
• Proof of English Language Proficiency if English is not your first language

For International Baccalaureate Requirements, you’ll need:

• A complete IB Diploma, including:
  • Theory of Knowledge and Extended Essay
  • Passes in at least six subjects (three at Higher Level)
  • A minimum total grade of 28 (including the Extended Essay and TOK)
  • No mark less than 4 on any course
  • Required courses for your program

Program-Specific Requirements

Every program has specific course and supplemental requirements.

• Required courses: You need these for admission to the program
• Recommended courses: You don’t need these to be admitted, but we do recommend that you take them to be successful in your first year and to be able to take the courses you need
• Supplemental requirements: These are additional forms, portfolios or auditions (they help Western decide if the program is right for you)
