What Is UBC Pharmaceutical Science’s Acceptance Rate?

The healthcare sector is changing fast, and PharmSci grads are right there in the thick of it uncovering new breakthroughs and creating life-changing treatments for those who need it most. With the pace of change, it’s no surprise Canada is in constant need of new highly qualified professionals to enter the field. But by no means is it an easy road for students like you.

UBC launched their brand new Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Sciences (BPSc) program last year, and many have been curious about acceptance rates.

With up to a thousand applicants vying for fewer than 100 spots, the Pharmaceutical Sciences program is extremely selective. But not to worry, future pharmaceutical scientists – GrantMe is here to help get you set up for a successful admissions process.

UBC Pharmaceutical Science Acceptance Rate

The Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Sciences program at UBC is a brand new program that launched in 2023. It’s one of only two programs of its kind in Canada where future medical trailblazers get a world-class education and prep themselves for various careers in the pharmaceutical industry.

The exact acceptance rate for UBC’s Pharmaceutical Science isn’t publicly available, but we estimate it to be less than 10%.

UBC doesn't release program-specific acceptance rates, so this isn’t a hard stat. But the program only accepts 65 new students a year and there’s high demand for jobs in this sector. It’s likely there are more than one thousand students vying for these limited spots.

But while the competition for admissions may be extremely fierce, GrantMe is here to make the application process smooth. We'll give you insider strategies to showcase your passion and potential, making you a standout candidate and helping you unlock funding in the process.

Why UBC Pharmaceutical Science is So Competitive

UBC’s Pharmaceutical Sciences program is renowned for its rigorous curriculum, wide array of elective courses, state-of-the art laboratories and personalized programs of study.

But above all, it’s the promise of a solid career in the pharmaceutical industry that draws aspiring students from all over the world to the prestigious program.

Employment Prospects and Career Guidance

UBC’s Pharmaceutical Sciences is a small niche program that offers personalized instruction as well as hands-on career guidance. They also assist in placing fourth year students with top jobs in the industry.

Although it’s a new program, graduates are expected to be highly sought after for roles in biotechnology, government policy, and healthcare administration. The program also opens doors to opportunities in emerging fields like nutraceuticals and health supplement development.

A Future in Pharmaceutical Sciences

Getting into UBC's Pharmaceutical Sciences program opens up a number of possibilities.

There are options for graduates to continue their education in graduate school or academia, as well as pursue careers in fields such as:

  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Government policy and regulatory affairs
  • Biotechnology
  • Healthcare administration
  • Pharmaceutical sales and marketing
  • Nutraceuticals
  • Veterinary drugs
  • Quality assurance management
  • Clinical research and development

Preparing the Right Mix

A young woman wearing an orange sweater works on her computer in a library.

Every pharmaceutical scientist knows that you’ve got to have the right mix. When it comes to attending a program like UBC’s Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Sciences, that includes meeting the grade point averages and fulfilling the mandatory course prerequisites.

You’ll need to be a high school grad with the equivalent of English 12, Precalculus 12, and Chemistry 12 plus a number of other Grade 11 course requirements in order for your application to even be eligible for the UBC PharmSci program.

You’ll also need a minimum grade point average of +80% with a minimum of 70% in Grade 11 or Grade 12 English (or equivalent).

However, keep in mind this is simply the price of entry. Academic excellence matters, so keep your sights set on a high GPA. With so many applicants vying for the coveted spots, you’ll likely need to achieve a 90% or higher in these courses to be a competitive applicant.

The Application Process

The application process itself is detailed, and involves the following steps:

1. Review the program’s admission requirements.

2. Join an information session, network with the faculty, and ask questions about the program.

3. Apply to UBC by submitting the online application before the deadline and ensure you send all required transcripts and other supplemental documents (if applicable) to the Undergraduate Admissions Office.

4. Ensure you select the Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Sciences program as your first choice, otherwise you won’t be considered.

5. Keep track of your application through the Applicant Service Centre (ASC).

There is an interview process for shortlisted candidates, and the Faculty will get in touch if you’re selected.

It’s recommended that you meticulously prepare your application, making sure to highlight all your relevant achievements and potential contributions to the field of pharmaceutical sciences.

Becoming a Competitive Candidate

Okay, future pharmaceutical scientist, you’ve got the right mix of brains and background. Now it’s time to crank things up a notch and really put yourself ahead of the competition.

A top program such as UBC’s Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Sciences only accepts top students.

Good grades will get you in the door, but the ability to showcase key non-academic traits will be what sets you apart and win you a spot in the program.

The admissions committee is looking for students who go above and beyond simply getting good grades. They’re looking for leaders in their communities with the extracurriculars, initiator roles, and volunteer experience to back it up.

The interview is where you’ll have a chance to demonstrate these traits and really go beyond the grades.

But even the most prepared students don’t really understand everything that goes into impressing the admissions committee. Understanding the nuances of a solid UBC Pharmaceutical Sciences application and tailoring your submission can greatly increase your chances of getting (and acing) an interview. GrantMe will give you all the info you need to plan ahead, get into UBC PharmSci, and even receive funding in the form of scholarships and bursaries.
