How to Write a Student Resume for a Summer Job
Arry Pandher - May 25th, 2022
When you’re busy with extracurriculars, group projects, and clubs, it’s hard to keep a part-time job during the school year! So in the summer, when you have a bit more free time to start a new job, you may find it a bit difficult to fill up your resume.
However, filling up your resume with unpaid experiences can actually be quite easy. Keep reading or watch our video below to find out how you can use transferable skills to write a student resume for a summer job!
When engaging with non-paid experiences like school clubs, and projects – the most important thing to take note of is its transferable skills. Transferable skills are skills that you can transfer from one experience to the other seamlessly.
These skills can include:
- Time management
- Project management
- Employee management
- Book-keeping / budget
- People skills
Think of your experiences, and the transferable skills you can use on your resume. Were you the president of your school club or the leader of your school project? These are your leadership skills! Were you the timekeeper of your club or the person in your group project that delegated everyone’s tasks? Those are excellent time management and organization skills!

Look at the top skills and qualifications needed on the job application, and evaluate how you can merge your experience with the experience they need.
For example, if they are looking for someone who is organized, or punctual, think about your timekeeping skills in your club!
Here’s a secret: not having paid experience doesn’t make you any less of a viable candidate for the job! Hiring managers usually know how tough it is being a student, and that skills accumulated during the school year can be very valuable! So, when you’re going into the interview, be confident in your transferable skills and show them that you are the perfect candidate!
