SFU is a public research university in British Columbia, Canada, with campuses in Burnaby, Surrey, and Vancouver. Simon Fraser University was founded in 1965 and is named after Scottish explorer and SFU founding president Simon Fraser. The school enrolls over 35,000 students in over 145 programs across eight faculties. The university has an endowment of over $ 340 million CAD. SFU is the first Canadian research university to receive the Community Engagement Classification from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. The university operates Canada’s largest co-operative education program, with over 5,400 undergraduate students enrolled in work placements each year. SFU is ranked 2nd among comprehensive universities in Canada by Maclean’s Magazine’s national survey of universities. In 2014/15, SFU was ranked 4th among Canadian doctorate-granting universities by Research Infosource. SFU has produced more Canada Research Chairs than any other university outside of Quebec.
General Number of Applicants
The university was established in 1965 and has grown to become one of the leading universities in the country. According to the most recent data from Statistics Canada, the school received a total of 47,664 applications for undergraduate programs in 2019. This was an increase of 3% from the year before and marks the sixth consecutive year that SFU has seen an increase in applications. The vast majority of applications came from students within British Columbia (74%), followed by students from Alberta (12%), Ontario (7%), and other parts of Canada (7%). These figures show that SFU is a popular choice for students across the country and that its reputation as a top-tier university continues to grow.
Most Popular Programs at SFU
The most popular undergraduate programs at SFU are business, engineering, sciences, and health sciences. The university also has a highly ranked computer science program. The school’s location near Vancouver gives students access to a number of internship and job opportunities. In addition, the school has a strong international focus and offers exchange programs with universities around the world. As a result, SFU is an excellent choice for students looking for a well-rounded education.
