McGill Overview

Founded in 1821, McGill is one of Canada’s oldest and most prestigious universities. The school is a research-intensive university with over $600 million in research funding annually from the government, industry, and other sources. The University attracts the brightest from across Canada and around the world.

With its two campuses – Downtown Montreal and Macdonald campus – McGill offers over 300 programs of study at the undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral levels. Over 40,000 people from more than 150 countries study at McGill, making it one of the most internationally diverse universities in the country.

Where is McGill?

The main campus is situated on the slopes of Mount Royal, in the city’s downtown core. The other is in Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue, on Montreal’s West Island. The town has everything from world-class dining and shopping to exciting nightlife. The city is also home to several festivals and events throughout the year, including the Montreal International Jazz Festival, the Just for Laughs Comedy Festival, and the Grand Prix of Canada.

The Meal Plan at McGill University

All students who live in residence are required to purchase a meal plan. The meal plan is used to purchase food at any on-campus dining hall. There are three different meal plans to choose from:

The Flex Plan: This allows you to spend a certain amount of money each week at any of their dining halls. You can also use your Flex dollars to purchase food at the Campus Cafeteria and certain off-campus restaurants. The 20 Meals Plan: This plan gives you 20 meals per week that can be used at any of the dining halls on campus. Meals must be used within seven days of being purchased. Food around Campus

There are a number of great places to eat around McGill’s downtown campus. Here are just a few of our favourites:

  • The Hub: The Hub is a popular on-campus eatery that offers a wide variety of food, including sandwiches, salads, pizzas, and more.
  • Bagel Etc: Bagel Etc is a favourite among students. They offer a wide selection of bagels, as well as other breakfast and lunch items.
  • Dinapoli: Dinapoli an Italian restaurant, is just steps from campus. They offer pizza, pasta, and other traditional Italian dishes.

Libraries around the School for McGill Students

Getting Around McGill Campus

There are several ways to get around McGill. The best way to get around is by walking, but several bus routes run through campus. The university is in downtown, in an area with limited parking. There are four main options for parking on campus: 1) street parking; 2) metered parking; 3) pay and display parking, and 4) permit parking. Street parking is available on many streets surrounding McGill, but it can be difficult to find a spot during peak hours. Metered parking is available in some lots, and the rates vary depending on the time of day. Pay and display parking is available in all visitor lots, and the rates are posted at the entrance to each lot. Permit parking is available for faculty, and staff for faculties, and permits can be purchased online or at the Parking Office.

McGill’s Student Body Society (SSMU) for the McGill Student Life

The Student Body Society (SSMU) is the official student government of McGill University. They represent the interests of university students and provide several services, including social events, continuing studies resources, activities night, clubs and publications, health and dental insurance, and more. They also support the McGill University health centre by providing upper year undergraduate students with resources that can be found there. The SSMU also runs the Gerts Dining Hall, which is a popular on-campus eatery that offers a variety of food, including sandwiches, salads, pizzas, and more.

The society can also direct you to health/medicine services, along with research or education services too and even lists of scholarships. Also, suppose English or French is not your first language or mother tongue. In that case, they can support you in your development, especially as in Canada, French and English are the primary languages. They will either find an environment, multiple teaching classes or create a collaboration with an organization or alumni to provide support. The SSMU is the largest student government in Quebec and is a great community to join for friends and alumni and is a great way to get involved.
